Cannellini & Lentil Soup

There's still time for some comfort food before the weather turns. This hearty soup has cannellini beans, lentils, fennel, red pepper, onion, bacon & spinach. Perfect for a crispy anchovy bruschetta.

Healthy, delicious, and it made enough to take leftovers for lunch.

Sunday Brunch

After the rain finally stopped Sunday morning it was time to meet Manchego for brunch at the local – Gilead Café. There's nothing like coming off detox with a bowl of poutine and a glass of merlot. More pics after the jump.

Turkey and barley soup.

Pork patty and potatoes.

Tres leches cake.

Sneezing Soup

The cooties got me bad. I knew I was done for on Sunday when the triple sneezing fits started and I quickly blew through two boxes of kleenex™. Fusilli took pity on me, and made the legendary chicken pot pie soup. Today I added broccoli for an extra cootie fighting boost.

Turtle, Turtle, Turtle

At one point in time the best meal I'd ever had was courtesy of Cafe Sbisa in New Orleans.
Turns out the following time we visited this place is sucked so bad that we had to "walk away" after the crappy service. Probably another conversation but none the less, I tried Turtle Soup here for the first time and have craved it ever since.
A subsequent visit to Emeril's Delmonico left me wishing I could make this tasty soup at home.
The Food Network is hip with the times and apparently Emeril's recipe isn't top secret so all I had to do was substitute the "cute" turtle ingredient with run of the mill pork...
This recipe takes some time but the end result is awesome. Don't forget the waitresses' sound wisdom of splashing some bum spirits on the finished product. (pictured above)
Also don't think twice about a wee little nip during the cooking process. 20% alc./vol will have you thinking about good times far away from Bourbon St...

Giant Head's Pea Pea Puree

The food Network has some awesome recipes, like this one Fusilli tried last night – Salmon in Lemon Brodetto with Pea Puree.

We still had lot's of chicken stock from the Tortilla soup, so Fusilli used it to create a soupy variation. The Salmon was perfectly seared and pink in the middle. You can't see the pea pea puree at the bottom, but it was delicious with a nice parmesan bite. A perfect winter meal.

Tortilla Soup

Fusilli made an old favorite this weekend - Tortilla Soup. I always think of it as the liquid equivalent of fajitas. First you make chicken soup... chicken + water + heat. Then you roast tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños, green & white onion. The roasted vegetables are puréed once they cool, and then added to the soup. When the chicken is done, you pull it out, let it cool and then pull it into bit size pieces.

This is the best part – prepare toppings for the soup. Cut tortilla shells into strips and toast them until crispy. Grate cheese. Chop cilantro. Slice avocado. Quarter a lime. Ready the plain yogurt, or sour cream. When you're ready to serve, ladle the soup into a bowl. Add chicken, and the rest of the toppings as desired. So good!

Cheese & Broccoli Soup

I've got a fridge full of veggies from Herrle's, so tonight I made broccoli soup. This is a combo of two recipes (1) from epicurious (2), with a dash of improv.

It turned out great, but in the end, the only thing I would have liked is an oven proof dish to broil the cheese a bit. That, and some crispy bacon to sprinkle on top. If you make this, don't forget the bacon.

Spicy Zoup

Fusilli made a delicious soup the other night. It had potato, sweet potato, leeks, carrots, squash, green beans, coconut milk and curry paste. Nice!

Tonight I added two pan-seared scallops and some toasted walnut bread.

Squash + Whiskey Soup

The first whisper of fall and I'm all over root vegetables. This afternoon at a farmer's stand in Caledon, it was a fine-looking organic butternut squash and a round, green variety with the irresistible name Sweet Mama that caught my eye.

A quarter cup of whiskey and a tablespoon or two of maple syrup make this soup sing. A drizzle of crème fraîche is nice too. Next time, when I'm not so hungry, there will be homemade croutons or warm breadsticks on the side.

It's Fall

You know it's Fall when you start to get a craving for something warm and comforting like a bowl of soup. Makes me feel sad about Summer being over, especially since it barely even arrived. But my colleague, Olive (her Broccoli&Prosecco name), tipped me off to her favourite chicken soup recipe with lemon and dill (and rice and spinach) and it was a savoury consolation for having to now wear sweaters and closed-toe shoes to work.

Italian fish soup

This is a great recipe, based on Italian Fish Soup. We added leeks, fennel and fresh fish of the day. Monk fish, scallops, calamari and clams. For dessert, cupcakes from The Cupcakery!
