Ceili Cottage

There's a great new patio on Queen, out in the east end—Ceili Cottage. It's worth a visit if you like eating oysters, drinking beer and sitting outside. We got there early on Saturday to avoid the line up and secure a good seat. My plan was basically to camp there until they asked me politely to leave. In then end we cleared out before last call... six hours was plenty of patio time for me.

The menu has a few excellent platters for sharing, like the one shown here—the Berkshire platter with beets, cabbage, soda bread and dijon mustard. We also tried the peat smoked salmon platter twice, a platter of oysters, a bowl of mussels and the buried treasure (mac & cheese with sausage. What? We were there for six hours... that's not a lot of food when you spread it out.

FYI—they are having an oyster eating contest. Best time eating 20 oysters wins a trip to Ireland with Patrick, the owner.

Pre-Show Snack

Before a night in the mosh pit you really need to fill up with a good meal. The new Rodney's, cleverly wedged into what had been a handful of parking spots, seemed like a good place to have our pre-show meal. We started with oysters and then sampled a few other dishes.

When it comes to dessert I often like to take a second look at the menu. A piece of cake is great and all, but wouldn't you rather have an oyster BLT? A fried oyster sitting atop cripsy panchetta, peppery greens and a juicy tomato beats cake any day.

After the oysters we shared a delicious piece of black cod with wilted greens, red pepper and shitake mushrooms.

For dessert – some Frightened Rabbit at the Horseshoe Tavern.

Oyster Detour

Last Friday, Prosecco and I were on the streetcar heading to a sketchy craigslist meeting when fate intervened, canceling the meeting, and dropping us off right in front of Rodney's. There's no point arguing with fate, so we headed in for a round of drinks and oysters while we waited for Fusilli and C. to join the party.

If I haven't said it before, I love oysters.... except the big ones. I almost choked to death on a fancy Malpec once – imagine trying to swallow a tongue. So now I just stick to the small ones that don't fight back on the way down. They're alive you know, and probably a little bit pissed about how things have turned out.

After oysters, I always have a shrimp cocktail. Is there anything better?

Happy New Year!

New Year's Eve is usually a night to invite friends over and cook too much food. This year, we were invited to a party at a friends-of-friends. The idea was simple - each person/couple would bring a course to create a five-course meal. We were assigned the amuse-bouche and the appetizer courses. It was also a themed evening, with everyone following a James Bond dress code. I don't own a tuxedo, so I chose casual Bond. Something he might wear on a night off, when he's tired of the suit and tie. It was lame, I know.

In the background, classic Bond films were playing and I snapped a pic of the original Dr. Evil from Dr. No. The drink of the evening was a Vesper, shown above. For the record, I'd like it to be known as a 'Kick to the Head.'

Here are the courses in order:
1. Duck in Endive w/ Orange Chipotle Sauce
2. Oysters Rockafeller
3. Taramasalata, Tuna & Scallop Ceviche
4. Arugula Salad w/ Roasted Figs & Goat Cheese
5. Mushroom Agnolotti in Beurre Blance w/ Shaved Truffle
6. Ribs w/ Rutabaga Mash
7. Cheese Course
8 & 9. Inappropriate use of Marzipan, compliments of Fusilli.

Of course, after a huge meal and numerous drinks we did the obvious thing... dancing and jumping! I'm amazed that no one hurled. Happy New Year!

Pearl Oyster Bar

It's hard to visit NYC and not end up at the same places you always go. I guess it's no different than being at home, you like what you like. I really like Pearl Oyster Bar, even when I have to line up. They're totally cool about getting you a drink while you wait, or taking your name so you can go for a walk before dinner. This time, when we arrived, we were whisked to a table at the back without waiting. First time ever!

We also found out shortly after arriving that Tyra had been there the night before... at the table right next to ours! We all lamented a missed opportunity to smile at her with our eyes. Although, if you've seen my passport photo, I "attempted" the eye smile and I look psychotic and constipated. Probably best we missed her.

We started with Oysters, but we were really there for the lobster rolls. I was a bit worried that we had over sold it to Prosecco and C. – the phrase "life changing" isn't often associated with lobster rolls. I'll leave it to Prosecco to comment how it lived up to expectation.

I've also included a picture of the chocolate sundae Prosecco ordered. For some reason P. was unable to finish her roll, but had room for a sundae. I'm not complaining, we all helped finish the lobster roll and then got a taste of dessert. Bonus.
