Crazy about crostata (aka fruit pizza)

Anyone who knows me knows that I can become a tad OCD about certain foods. My latest obsession is this wholewheat biscuit base crostata. It's not your traditional Italian crostata but it is way easier. Take any biscuit recipe, flatten out the dough and top with your favourite fruit (+ cinnamon + nutmeg + brown sugar). I've been doing peaches lately but am excited to try apples or pears sliced thin on the mandoline. A dollop of whipped cream on the side would make it perfection.

Sunday Muffins

Sunday, rainy Sunday. The rain outside the window sounds like a sizzling hot deep fryer – I'm serious.

Fusilli took some of the future smoothie bananas, dates and walnuts to make these excellent mini muffins. I also made an almond milk, banana, peach & blueberry smoothie.

Winter Breakfast

You can only delude yourself that winter is coming for so long. Pretty much until the first snow... when you find yourself super-sliding down the sidewalk. If anyone has a winter boot suggestion, I'm looking, and so for no luck. Please note: I'm too old to wear lace-ups, so slip-on suggestions only, thank-you.

Now that it's crap out, sun or no sun, I'm into the oatmeal. Just a point of clarification – if your "oatmeal" takes 2 minutes, or worse, you just have to add hot water... it's not oatmeal. It has to be punished in boiling water for 25 minutes to qualify as oatmeal. Would you eat instant pasta? I didn't think so.

Because oatmeal is pretty much inedible on its own, we've stocked up with a seasons worth of frozen blueberries from Herrle's. Barring any freezer malfunction, I'm good until spring. This morning I added a dollop of everyone's favorite – black cherry yogurt.

Cloud Pancakes

Taking a day off to relax calls for pancakes. Martha's recipe for Cloud Pancakes is a perfect fit, light, fluffy and not too rich. The secret – whipped egg whites and ricotta cheese.

Of course, once you pour pure maple gold over the whole thing, it's caution to the wind. Me thinks some whipped cream would have been right at home on top of those blueberries. Next time.

Sunday Morning Should be Every Morning

I know all of my Canadian friends are cringing right now at the sight of Log Cabin Maple Syrup. But to this American girl, it's heaven. What a great Sunday morning, Seattle's Best Javanilla coffee made by Mom, blueberry pancakes made by Mom and the Sunday Target ad.  I love Sunday morning during vacations.

Apricot Jam

Apricots are in season for the next few minutes, so Fusilli did the smart thing, and made a batch of jam. One basket = nine jars of jam.

The after shot, shows how blueberries, apricots, and pancakes can make happy-happy together. I recommend apricot jam on everything but pickles.

Booberries

It's officially Blueberry season in Ontario. If you're not eating Blueberries, in large quantities, every day than I only have one question for you. WTF? Do you need an invitation? You're looking a little pale, perhaps could use some phytochemicals.
