Flour Tortillas

I got an early Christmas present from Prosecco—a tub of Pork Lard! In return I promised to post everything I make with this delicious gift.

First up, Rick Bayless' Flour Tortialls. I saw him make this recently on Mexico - One Plate at a Time. It looked so simple and delicious I had to try it.

Topped with Mexican Black Beans, Chimichurri sauce, scrambled eggs, avocado, cilantro and a squeeze of fresh lime. Awesome!

A San Frantastic Workcation

Sometimes work can be fun. In particular, when work takes you to San Francisco!

First on the list—a visit to the Ferry Building where each Saturday they have an incredible farmer's market. The highlight was definitely this strange fruit called Buddah's hand.

The beautiful hallways at The Clift. So Starck.

One night I was lucky enough to get a tour of Palo Alto, attend a lecture at the offices of IDEO and tour the campus of Standford.

Around the corner from the hotel is an incredible breakfast place called Dottie's True Blue Cafe. The routine—line up at 7am so you can get in the door when it opens at 7:30. Don't forget to bring your own coffee, all their creative energy went into the food.

By Saturday morning, I'd had enough of Dottie's coffee so I searched for breakfast options on Yelp. I found The Butler & The Chef, an awesome French bistro

The smolked salmon eggs benedict, fresh squeezed o.j. and a delicious latte. It was so good, I went back the next day so I could line up for 45 minutes to have a breakfast crepe.

Heading to the farmer's market, I walked along the Embarcadaro and right under the Oakland Bay Bridge. Beautiful.

I love my macchiato from Bluebottle Coffee. The only problem... you have to line up for 20 minutes to get one. It's worth the wait.

They have food too! Hello Mr. Waffle.

Random chocolate fountain!

An outdoor indie music fest in the Mission.

So Long Speedy Burger

Seems like every weekend, when I get back to the hood, there's something new opening up, closing down or being demolished. On Saturday we were fueling up at our local, F'Coffee, enjoying coffee and breakfast sandwiches, while across the street Speedy Burger was being torn down. I won't miss SB or the rest of the strip mall, but I'm not looking forward to the new condo either. Slowly, all the local colour is bleeding out of the hood and being replaced with a lot of gray. If Jilly's goes, I won't be far behind.

Madras Pantry

Bored with our breakfast options in the hood, we decided to ride out to the wild west on Saturday for something different. I'm not sure I'm ready to change my breakfast routine after trying the Jerk Chicken Dosa, but it certainly was an interesting change from granola or eggs. The mango lassi I ordered was the highlight for me, thick like a milkshake, mixed with ice cubes so it stayed super cold the whole time. Nummy.

Sunday breakfast

A plain jane breakfast while browsing blogs– wholewheat toast with almond butter and a handful of cherries picked the day before.

Detox Breakfast

The best thing about the detox was discovering that some of my favorite meals were on the "list". Par example – smoked arctic char with scrambled eggs and avocado. Fresh squeeze on the side, of course.

Gran-Hola!

I spent Sunday with the cooties, and I think some of them got on me. Yesterday I was cold all day... today my head felt hot but my feet were cold. I left work early and went to the market to buy a big bag of Florida oranges. When I got home I made a tall glass of fresh squeeze, added some vitamin V and curled up on the couch.

When I got up it was dark and I had a craving for breakfast. I was out of granola but I had all the ingredients so I threw together my favorites – oats, oat bran, walnuts, almonds, sun flower seeds, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds. Over that I poured a warm mixture of butter, almond butter, honey, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon. 20 minutes later the smell of fresh roasted granola gave me a wicked craving for something completely different, so I had that for dinner instead. Can you guess what it was?

Breakfast Bellini

I opened the fridge Saturday morning, and to my surprise, there was an open bottle of Prosecco next to the OJ. It was a magical moment... I swear I heard a bell.

Before I could reach for the bottle my voice of reason reminded me that it was 10am.  I thought about if for a moment, but I felt since it was Saturday, my VOR should eff-off.

Technically this is not a Bellini, but it's what I had in mind. Cheers!

Barney Greengrass: The Sturgeon King

An old friend introduced us to The Sturgeon King years ago. Since then, I can't visit the city without making the long trip to the upper west side for smoked fish. This meal will get you through the day if necessary, but I like to get there early so I can still have lunch.

This time I noticed other tables engaged in a ritual I've never seen before. While chatting, they were all hollowing out their bagel halves, making a channel. Next, the channel was filled with smoked fish, and the creme cheese was applied on top. Fascinating.

Gitane – Part Deux

We all went back to Cafe Gitane for breakfast before hitting the MoMa. I was totally having breakfast envy looking at Prosecco's baked eggs. I decided on the "fibre" option and fueled up with coffee, chocolate croissant, granola, yogurt and fruit. Did you know that pain au chocolat provides 100% of your daily fibre requirements?

Cafe Gitane

Another spot discovered while wandering around Nolita. It was packed at 4pm, so we made note to try it for breakfast the next day. It was a beautiful sunny morning to sit outside, enjoying the front row at a street fashion show. After the previous night's burger, this was about all I could manage.

Breakfast is Good for Your Brain

I'm trying to eat a great breakfast every day. In fact, I'd almost say I'm enjoying breakfast more than dinner lately. Lunch is a total write off when things get busy, so I'm going to focus on meals I can make at home – breakfast and dinner.

This is a great example of a 15-minute meal. It takes longer to brush your teeth than it does to scramble eggs, so no excuses. I think I've got this timed out perfectly.

Fire up the Nespresso... cut the avo in half and arrange on the plate... add two strips of smoked salmon (sorry bacon)... start melting butter in the pan... drop a pod in the Nespresso and hit go!... crack eggs into the pan... next pod into the Nespresso... drop eggs onto plate... add cream to coffee... sit down and enjoy. That's not even 15 minutes.

The Vegas Monte Christo

Before stocking up on supplies, you have to have a great breakfast. Thank-you City Search for pointing us to Maple Tree, a great spot that has my favorite – the Monte Christo sandwich. Their version has ham, turkey and swiss cheese. It's also deep fried, accompanied by a side of piping hot raspberry purée and fruit. I know what you're thinking... no bacon? Me too, so I ordered a side of the same. In summary, it was incredible. Crispy, not greasy, and nicely complimented by the raspberry purée.

Fusilli had incredible blue-crab cakes with hollandaise.  Cupcake had fluffy pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon.

Yah I'm a pig. So what?

I can't help it. I love breakfast in Italy. Especially since I found out it could be a gelato sandwich! Here's a tamer breakfast I had yesterday. When we went to the counter to order, C asks me what I wanted, and I indicated a cappuccino and cannoli. But knowing the pig I've turned into since I got here, he says "Of course you want the large one, right?"

Breakfast: one more time!

I was pretty surprised when one morning, C suggested we go to the local gelateria... for breakfast?! Here, I ate for the first time ever, the most indulgent ice cream sandwich at 10am. A brioche cut in half slathered with vanilla and gianduia gelati. The thing barely fit in my hand and melted all over my hands and legs as I tried to eat it with dirty pigeons greedily flocking around me. Needless to say, I finished the whole thing and the crash from that sugar high was worth every last lick. Oh, and the chocolate smeared all over the little girl's face on the gelateria sign is a good indication of how one looks when you're eating the actual gelato.

Breakfast in Rome

So it's not the healthiest of breakfasts, but what the hell? I'm on vacation! I liked this bakery so much I had to eat there twice in two days. Croissants filed with cream or chocolate and a hot foamy cappuccino to wash it down. For C, he prefers the latte di mandorla- almond milk.

Dream Breakfast

I may be alone on this one, but the last thing I think about before going to sleep is what I'm going to have for breakfast. Since Gilead Café opened in the hood, this is what I picture: An Americano, Yogurt with Granola, and Pain au Chocolat.

You can't really do much better, even though bacon is obviously absent from this picture. However, on occasion, breakfast can stretch into lunch and then bacon magically appears wearing a poached egg.

Weekends are the best.

Truffled egg toast

Some would disagree, but Prosecco with breakfast is fantastic. If it comes with a shot of peach nectar, and is called a Bellini, so much the better. When in NYC, the best place to enjoy a glass of the bubbles is at Ino Cafe and Wine bar. Based on Rob's recommendation, I had a glass with the truffled egg toast. I think the picture says it all.

Village Creperie

Saturday morning breakfast at the Village Creperie is a must, when in the Loo. Rob ordered a bottle of Quebéc sparkling cidre, and eggs rancheros. I had my favorite – smoked salmon eggs benny. Not shown, but equally enjoyed, a round of fresh-squeezed orange juice with vodka. And for dessert, an Americano with a splash of Baileys. Best followed by a nap, or a walk.
