Yogurt Hoarding Squirrels

We're all squirrels to a certain extent... hoarding stuff, easily mesmerized by shiny objects. Fusilli hoards toothpaste for fear they may stop making Colgate Winterfresh flavour. I once found ten tubes in the bathroom cupboard... seriously.

Anyway, now we're so addicted to our apples, yogurt and granola routine that we've started hoarding our favourite yogurt! It all started when we discovered Liberté's Méditerranée style vanilla yogurt and then quickly realized it's not always in plentiful supply. Running out of yogurt can lead to morning trauma, which is the worst kind of trauma. So now when it's in stock, we just grab everything on the shelf and run erratically to the checkout.

addicted

I am seriously addicted to and obsessed with this granola. If you've been following my tweets, or sit next to me at work (yes, you Lionel!) you'll know that I eat my version of olive oil granola every single day with a dollop or two of Liberté Mediterranean-style extra thick, extra fat yogurt with a side of coffee. Friday is my granola supply shopping day, which I usually do with Tomi, who introduced me to brown rice syrup. I think it's the je ne sais quoi ingredient that makes the granola taste like there's crack in it. I substitute brown rice syrup for the brown sugar and maple syrup that the NY Times recipe calls for. This week's granola contains: pepitas, almonds, sunflower seeds, wheat bran, dried cranberries and flax seed.

Olive Oil Granola

You can always count on the NYTimes Dining & Wine section for interesting recipes. Did you see the recent recipe for granola with olive oil?

I passed on the dried apricots (dry gagging sound) and pistachios (not for breakfast, thank you) and used a more traditional mix. Rolled oats, slivered almonds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, shredded coconut and dates. The only other adjustment is the maple syrup... cut back a 1/4 cup and it's perfect.

Gran-Hola!

I spent Sunday with the cooties, and I think some of them got on me. Yesterday I was cold all day... today my head felt hot but my feet were cold. I left work early and went to the market to buy a big bag of Florida oranges. When I got home I made a tall glass of fresh squeeze, added some vitamin V and curled up on the couch.

When I got up it was dark and I had a craving for breakfast. I was out of granola but I had all the ingredients so I threw together my favorites – oats, oat bran, walnuts, almonds, sun flower seeds, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds. Over that I poured a warm mixture of butter, almond butter, honey, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon. 20 minutes later the smell of fresh roasted granola gave me a wicked craving for something completely different, so I had that for dinner instead. Can you guess what it was?

Fresh Granola

We ran out of granola again, so I made a fresh batch. This has lots of goodness – walnuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, oats, bran, flax, almond butter, cinnamon, vanilla and honey. I bought a bag of dried blueberries, but I'm going to add them as needed. Apparently, some people don't like dried fruit in their granola.
