Peanut-Chipotle Sauce & Giant Corn

Corn wasn't really the star of the meal, but I will say this... it was huge! The corn came fresh from Herrle's, where they bring in multiple varieties from the field serveral times a day. The only way it could be fresher is if they let you pick it yourself. Ok, enough about the corn. The pork tenderloin with peanut-chipotle sauce was the shizz, not too spicy, not too sweet. Unlike most peanut sauce recipes this one has a tomato base, so yes it has some peanut flavour, but you don't feel like your eating melted peanut butter. A Bobby Flay original.

Pan fried Tilapia with a spicy chili lime butter. Fresh beans from Herrle's. There was fresh corn too, but I forgot to take a picture.

Winter Breakfast

You can only delude yourself that winter is coming for so long. Pretty much until the first snow... when you find yourself super-sliding down the sidewalk. If anyone has a winter boot suggestion, I'm looking, and so for no luck. Please note: I'm too old to wear lace-ups, so slip-on suggestions only, thank-you.

Now that it's crap out, sun or no sun, I'm into the oatmeal. Just a point of clarification – if your "oatmeal" takes 2 minutes, or worse, you just have to add hot water... it's not oatmeal. It has to be punished in boiling water for 25 minutes to qualify as oatmeal. Would you eat instant pasta? I didn't think so.

Because oatmeal is pretty much inedible on its own, we've stocked up with a seasons worth of frozen blueberries from Herrle's. Barring any freezer malfunction, I'm good until spring. This morning I added a dollop of everyone's favorite – black cherry yogurt.

Cheese & Broccoli Soup

I've got a fridge full of veggies from Herrle's, so tonight I made broccoli soup. This is a combo of two recipes (1) from epicurious (2), with a dash of improv.

It turned out great, but in the end, the only thing I would have liked is an oven proof dish to broil the cheese a bit. That, and some crispy bacon to sprinkle on top. If you make this, don't forget the bacon.

Elderberries

My gram and I used to make elderberry pie so when I saw them at Herrle's, I had to buy them. It has probably been 20 years since I last ate them and they're delicious! Kind of like a really strong blueberry.

Fusilli by Fusilli

Yes, walnuts on pasta. Try it sometime, I think you'll like it. Also shown, a sentimental favorite from a long-ago trip abroad, Chateau De Nages.

Chicken à la things

More goodies from Herrle's. Fresh beans, peas and potatoes. The chicken hitched it from Toronto's St. Lawrence Market, but it was well loved before it hit the plate. I'd say this meal was 100% local and organic. S'nice.

Butter Conduit

It's not that the butter is more important than the corn, but would you really enjoy it as much without the butter and salt?

This time of year Herrle's in Waterloo is serving up several varieties of corn straight from the field. It could only be fresher if you picked it yourself.
